Mobile Number Portability might finally launch on November 25th, or not

The elusive mobile number portability might finally roll out starting November 25th. Having said that if it were delayed  once more I wouldn’t be surprised. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) said that the service will begin roll out in Harayana (in North India) on the 25th of November. The reason for the delay and three missed deadline is partly infrastructure and partly the lack of willingness from the service providers.

The roll out of the service will be done in phases with the 22 telecomm circles being divided into two geographical zones which are further divided to represent cities within the zones. Sachin Pilot (Minister of State for Communications and Information and Technology) said, “The MNP will make the mobile sector more competitive as companies will be forced to upgrade and improve their services leading to more benefits for customers in terms of both quality of service and its cost-effectiveness.” On the delay of the launch he sighted the rapid growth of the mobile sector and avoiding any technical glitches as reasons.

The service was expected to start on November 1st but was delayed to November 25th. COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews said, “All the intra-circles will be competed by November 30. Inter-circle for Haryana will also be completed. So the next phase is inter-circle, that is circle-to-circle. That will commence on December 1.” COAI Cellular Operators’ Association of India.

Adding confusion to the release date, there is news that the GSM operators have requested the government to push the delay across the country further to January, 2011. CDMA and the new GSM operators say they are ready to roll out the service. Mr S.C. Khanna from the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India, said: “Only the incumbent GSM operators have an issue. All the CDMA and new GSM operators are ready to start MNP by December. DoT should go ahead with it.”

Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular are said to  be the ones who’ve asked the government for the extension. The service not being started in the metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore seems to be a compromise reached to get the service rolling at the same time appeasing the big GSM players.

Facebook's smaller font size straining eyes

CNN        Facebook is the biggest name in social networking. But overnight, it got smaller.
The font size on much of the site appears to have shrunk -- a tweak that has folks complaining about their poor, News Feed-browsing eyes.
By Wednesday morning, users had taken to Twitter to sound off on the change, mostly for the negative.
"Eye doctors everywhere must love the smaller default font onFacebook this morning. Eyes squinting everywhere!" wrote Twitter user esilverstein.
Other comments took a sillier tone.
"What kind of bionic carrot-flavored crack rock are the facebook developers smoking to make the font this small? I call ageism!" said a user with the screen name "thembithembi."
The responses were predominantly negative, but not unanimously.
"I'm apparently the odd man out but i've always liked small fonts indesign, so i give two tiny thumbs up to new Facebook font," wrote user kenromano.
A couple of Facebook groups have sprung up to complain about the change, but none had picked up many members as of early Wednesday.

As of late Wednesday morning, Facebook had made no mention of the change on its site. Facebook spokespeople could not be reached immediately Wednesday morning to comment.

Intel to Build New Chip Plant in Oregon, and Upgrade Others

The Intel Corporation said on Tuesday that it planned to invest $6 billion to $8 billion to upgrade manufacturing plants in the United States and build a new one in Oregon, adding as many as 1,000 new high-tech positions and thousands of construction jobs.
Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., has historically used its substantial cash reserves to invest in its manufacturing plants through economic downturns, advancing its technology while rivals struggled to stay afloat. It is a strategy that has been largely successful. Indeed, last week, the company reported better-than-expected earnings on a sharp increase in revenue.
“These investments will create capacity for innovation we haven’t yet imagined,” said Brian M. Krzanich, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s manufacturing and supply chain.
A similar $7 billion investment by Intel about 20 months ago was focused on making chips using 32-nanometer process technology. Paul S. Otellini, Intel’s chief executive, vowed at that time to invest in chip factories in the United States rather than send the business abroad. He also urged other companies to follow Intel’s model of investing in future products despite the recession.
In recent months, Mr. Otellini has railed against incentives and other practices that make it far cheaper for companies to build and operate chip plants abroad. He has estimated it costs $1 billion less to operate a chip factory overseas than in the United States, not because of lower labor costs but because of incentives from foreign governments. Intel generates three-fourths of its revenue from overseas business, but three-fourths of its chip-making employees are in the United States.
Mr. Krzanich told reporters in a conference call that Intel benefited from the large manufacturing base in the United States despite the potential cost savings of manufacturing abroad. He called the plants a great asset “from a hardware standpoint,” but also because the employees were highly skilled. “We’re going to utilize that,” he said.
The upgraded plants will pave the way for higher-performing and sleeker electronic devices by allowing Intel to produce a new generation of 22-nanometer chips. The new Hillsboro, Ore., plant — Intel’s first new plant since 2007 — is scheduled to start production in 2013.

4G Wireless Reaches the New York Area

On Monday, Clearwire, a wireless broadband company, introduced its Clear 4G WiMax wireless Internet service in New York City and other areas of the country, including Connecticut, Florida and New Jersey.
The service, which until now has been available in limited areas, offers a speed boost over 3G service and can be broadcast over large areas, sometimes miles wide, using a limited number of wireless antennas.
And it’s fast. The 4G available through Clearwire has an average mobile download speed of 3 to 6 megabits a second, which is nearly four times faster than the 3G network used by most wireless providers. The company says that in some instances speeds can reach 10 megabits a second.
Clearwire is trying to win over customers by offering unlimited data plans and lower prices than 3G. In a press release issued by the company, Clearwire said it would offer 4G coverage starting at $35 for home use, along with $45 mobile plans that can be used with laptop computers and some 4G-enabled mobile phones. There are a range of service options that continue to rise in price based on use.
Clearwire will eventually aim at more mobile phones, but in light of to the limited number of 4G-capable devices in the marketplace today, the company seems to be focusing on customers who want access to fast wireless service from a laptop or home computer. Some computers already have a WiMax 4G chip built in, but most laptops will require a dongle that slips into a computer’s USB port.
In a Web site dedicated to enticing New York customers to switch to the new service, Clearwire is offering customers 50 percent off their service for the first two months, and says customers will be able to “stream TV, download music and video chat anywhere in our new mobile Internet coverage areas.”
Sprint, the wireless network, also began a 4G service in New York City on Monday. The carrier said it would offer two 4G-enabled mobile phones for the network which will include the Samsung Epic and HTC Evo. Customers will also be able to purchase the Overdrive Hotspot which can be shared with can broadcast WiMax speeds to non-4G devices.

China claims supercomputer crown

The Tianhe-1A supercomputer is about 50% faster than its closest rival.

                                                        China has claimed the top spot on the list of the world's supercomputers.

The title has gone to China's Tianhe-1A supercomputer that is capable of carrying out more than 2.5 thousand trillion calculations a second.

To reach such high speeds the machine draws on more than 7,000 graphics processors and 14,000 Intel chips.

The claim to be the fastest machine on the planet has been ratified by the Top 500 Organisation which maintains a list of the most powerful machines.

High power

China's Tianhe-1A (Milky Way) has taken over the top spot from America's XT5 Jaguar at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee that can carry out only 1.75 petaflops. One petaflop is the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

The news about the machine broke just before the publication of the biennial Top 500 Supercomputer list which ranks the world's most powerful machines.

Prof Jack Dongarra from the University of Tennessee, one of the computer scientists who helps to compile the list, said China's claim was legitimate.

"This is all true," he told BBC News. "I was in China last week and talked with the designers, saw the system, and verified the results."

He added: "I would say it's 47% faster than the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's machine, 1.7 Pflops (ORNL system) to 2.5 Pflops (Chinese system)."

Tianhe-1A is unusual in that it unites thousands of Intel processors with thousands of graphics cards made by Nvidia.

The chips inside graphics cards are typically made up of smaller processing units that can carry out a limited set of arithmetical oeprations very quickly. By contrast, Intel processors for desktop machines are typically capable of carrying out much more complicated mathematical operations.

The machine houses its processors in more than 100 fridge-sized cabinets and together these weigh more than 155 tonnes.

Based in China's National Center for Supercomputing in the city of Tianjin, the computer has already started to do work for the local weather service and the National Offshore Oil Corporation.

Facebook Nails Developers Leaking User Data

 

Remember all the hullaballoo in October over The Wall Street Journal's report that third-party Facebook developers were leaking user information to Internet tracking firms? Turns out those privacy concerns may have been justified. Facebook recently acknowledged that some developers were deliberately selling user IDs (UIDs) to data brokerage firms. UIDs are uniquely identifying numbers that can be used to find your Facebook profile and any profile information you have made publicly available.

You and Your Facebook UID

At a minimum, knowing your UID can show someone your name and Facebook likes, but many users also leave other information public such as their location and friends list. The brokers could use any information they find on your Facebook profile and sell it to advertisers.
Facebook says "fewer than a dozen" Facebook application developers were selling UIDs to data brokerage firms. As a result of their naughty behavior, the data-selling developers have been suspended from Facebook for six months.   Facebook will also audit the developers to make sure they don't sell Facebook user information again.   The social network also says it is working on a technical solution to make it impossible for developers to leak UIDs in the future.
Facebook didn't name the developers or the applications they produced, but the company did say they were "mostly small" Facebook application makers and none were behind the top 10 applications on Facebook.

Facebook's Privacy Problems

Facebook has long been criticized over how it manages user data and privacy. Shortly after the social network's developer conference in April, the company came under fire for allowing developers to store user data indefinitely. Previously, developers could only hold user data for 24 hours.   The Electronic Privacy Information Center along with 14 other consumer protection groups in May launched a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission over Facebook's treatment of user privacy. In October, Congressmen Edward Markey (D., Mass.) and Joe Barton (R., Texas) sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg about concerns surrounding third-party developers leaking information to advertising and tracking firms.
Some of Facebook's partners have also been pulled into the social network's latest privacy scandal. Popular Facebook developer Zynga--the company behind games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars--was recently the target of a class-action lawsuit over its alleged treatment of Facebook user data.

Facebook Privacy Scandal or Much Ado About Nothing?

Even if you account for the fact that some developers were selling user IDs to data brokerage firms, it is debatable about how serious this so-called privacy breach really is. Knowing your user ID cannot reveal any private information you have on Facebook, and some have likened knowing your UID to finding your name and address in the phone book. Regardless, it is reassuring to hear that Facebook has zero tolerance for data leakers and is punishing those who violated Facebook's policies and sold UIDs to outside firms.
